Turning noise into signal: learning from the scatter in the Hubble diagram

The supernova (SN) Hubble diagram residual contains valuable information on both the present matter power spectrum and its growth history. In this paper we show that this information can be retrieved with precision by combining both peculiar velocity and weak-lensing analysis on the data. To wit, peculiar velocity induces correlations on the nearby SN while lensing induces a non-Gaussian dispersion in faraway objects. We show that both effects have almost orthogonal degeneracies and discuss how they can be extracted simultaneously from the data. We analyze the JLA supernova catalog in a 14-dimensional parameter space, assuming a flexible growth-rate index $\gamma$. We arrive at the following marginalized constraints: $\sigma_8 = 0.65^{+0.23}_{-0.37}$ and $\gamma = 1.38^{+1.7}_{-0.65}$. Assuming instead GR as the correct gravitation theory (and thus $\gamma \equiv 0.55$), the constraints in $\sigma_8$ tighten further: $\sigma_8 = 0.40^{+0.21}_{-0.23}$. This article deals with Max Weber’s relationship with German politics. According to Carlos M. Herrera, the reception of Weberian political ideas in Weimar was the object of an open politico-intellectual battle –mainly in the field of state theory. The ambivalence in Weber’s theory is highlighted when it is established that his thinking was used by the various and opposing actors that, from Hans Kelsen and Richard Thoma to Carl Schmitt, were protagonists of the politico-intellectual debate about liberal democracy, the social rule of law and dictatorship.Este artículo trata sobre la relación de Max Weber con la política alemana. Según Carlos M. Herrrera, la recepción de las ideas políticas weberianas en Weimar fue objeto de una abierta batalla político-intelectual, fundamentalmente en el terreno de la teoría del Estado. COMSOL Assisted Modeling of a Climbing Film Evaporator

The aim of this project was to create a computer model of a climbing film evaporator using COMSOL Multiphysics. We used the designed climbing film evaporator lab for CHE 4402 to structure our lab experiment and to collect lab data about the change of composition in the evaporator feed solution. The data was then used to create a simulation model using COMSOL Multiphysics. We concluded that COMSOL can be an effective way for simulating a climbing film evaporator given the correct heat transfer coefficients, heat flux expressions, boundary conditions, and concentrations and we developed recommendations, which we present regarding future modeling and experimentation
